BlueCard Claims

The BlueCard® program gives BlueCross members access to health care services when traveling or living in another Blue Plan’s service area. You may occasionally see patients who are enrolled in Blue Plans from other states or countries. You can submit claims for these members to us, and we’ll route them to the appropriate plan for you. We’re committed to making your experience filing BlueCard claims simple and seamless.

Ask for the Current Member ID

You should always ask for the current member ID card at the time of service. Make copies of both the front and back of the card, and share them with your billing staff.

BlueCard members have three-character prefixes at the beginning of their ID numbers. The prefix is key to facilitating prompt payment. The member ID is a combination of alpha and numeric characters. It may be up to 17 characters long. It’s crucial that you use the full and accurate member ID when submitting BlueCard claims.

Check Benefits and Eligibility

Check benefits and eligibility for BlueCard members by calling 800-676-BLUE (2583) and providing the prefix or by using My Insurance ManagerSM

You can check whether the Home Plan requires prior authorization by using the BlueCard Precertification tool. You’ll need the prefix from the patient’s member ID card. If prior authorization is required, you can initiate the process through My Insurance Manager. Once you’ve logged in, go to Patient Care. Then select “Pre-Service Review for Out-of-Area Members” from the menu.

Submit Claims to the Local Blue Plan

If you're a South Carolina provider, submit claims to BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina. For faster processing, we recommend you submit BlueCard claims electronically. You can submit electronic claims to BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina directly, through a clearinghouse or by using My Insurance Manager

Please do not request full payment up front. To check claim status, visit My Insurance Manager.
